An indisputable fact is that as the earth’s population reaches 8 billion, the shortage of fresh water resources will be the first to become prominent.
Water is of great significance to human survival and development. Therefore, in order to maintain the balance between water for industrial production and domestic water and actively respond to the climate crisis, people have begun to use various technical means to "Ask for water" from the vast ocean. As a country with a large population, my country has a strong demand for water and has become one of the pioneers in the field of seawater desalination.
At the national level, it is believed that seawater desalination utilization will be an important way to solve China's coastal water shortage and an important supplement and strategic reserve of coastal water resources. On September 27, based on the investigation, statistics and analysis of seawater utilization in 2022, the Ministry of Natural Resources organized the preparation of the "2022 National Seawater Utilization Report" to reflect the current status of seawater resource utilization in our country.
The report shows that as of the end of 2022, there are 150 seawater desalination projects in the country and 50 seawater desalination projects of 10,000 tons and above, achieving the "three consecutive jumps" since 2020. . This desalinated water is mainly industrial water and domestic water. In 2022, new desalination projects for industrial water will mainly provide high-quality water for high-water-consuming industries such as petrochemicals, steel, and electricity.
At the technical level, as of the end of 2022, there are 133 projects applying reverse osmosis technology across the country, accounting for 64.91% of the total project scale, which is the current mainstream technical method; There are 17 projects using low-temperature multi-effect technology, accounting for 34.81%; 1 project using multi-stage flash evaporation technology, accounting for 0.26%; and 1 project using forward osmosis technology, accounting for 0.02%. At this stage, companies engaged in seawater desalination business are generally optimistic about reverse osmosis membranes when planning their layout, such as Bi Water.
In response to investors’ questions, Bishuiyuan stated that seawater desalination technology is one of the company’s core technologies. The company already has an independently developed seawater desalination reverse osmosis membrane production line, and is targeting reverse osmosis membrane production line equipment. In line with the demand for localization, the reverse osmosis base membrane production line and interfacial polymerization production line will be localized, and the membrane production speed will be at the internationally advanced level. Its dual-membrane desalination integrated technology with the core of "UF-RO" has the characteristics of high water production and strong anti-pollution ability, and has been widely used in coastal areas.
At the same time, the national level is also actively promoting the localization of seawater desalination equipment. "Desalination Technology and Equipment Research and Development and Application Demonstration Project in Typical Areas of the Basin" Project, "Low-Carbon Energy-Saving Seawater"Research and Development of Key Materials for Water Desalination and Resource Recycling and Technology Demonstration" projects have been prioritized. The "14th Five-Year Plan" national key research and development plan also mentions "large-scale preparation technology of mixed matrix water treatment membrane materials".
As early as the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for National Seawater Utilization" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the State Oceanic Administration in 2016, it has been proposed that "by 2020, seawater utilization will be applied on a large scale."
The "Desalination Utilization Development Action Plan (2021-2025)" jointly issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Natural Resources clearly states that 4-6 desalination demonstration cities will be built to form a Experience that can be replicated and promoted. It is required that by 2025, the total scale of seawater desalination in the country will reach more than 2.9 million tons/day, and the key core technology and equipment of seawater desalination will be independently controllable. , the global seawater desalination industry market size is approximately US$19.29 billion. According to this forecast, the agency predicts that water shortages, freshwater resource depletion and rapid improvements in seawater desalination technology are expected to drive the growth of the seawater desalination market from 2022 to 2028. The market will grow at a compound growth rate of 8.8%, and by 2028, the global seawater desalination market will reach US$34.6 billion.
According to a report released by the World Water Resources Institute, there are currently 100,000 desalination plants in the world. More than 1 billion people live in water-scarce areas, and 3.5 billion people will face water shortages by 2025. In my country, water conservation has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, and the development of seawater desalination will also become an important means to increase water supply and optimize the water supply structure.
