According to foreign media reports, Swedish shipyard Candela is looking to make some waves in the local water transportation field, with its planned new hydrofoil ferry that it claims will surpass other ferries in the world in many aspects. The P-30 aims to be the fastest all-electric passenger ship ever built, while also purifying waterways and the surrounding air by eventually replacing the diesel ferries currently serving the city of Stockholm.
The P-30 will be 40 feet (12 meters) long, with enough room for 30 passengers, and will be powered by two 60-kilowatt electric pod thrusters. These powers will propel the ship to a top speed of 30 knots and a service speed of 20-25 knots, while the ship's 180kWh lithium battery will provide a range of over 60 nautical miles.
The company said these specifications will make the P-30 not only the fastest electric passenger ship in the world, but also the first ship to offer long-distance voyages. This is largely thanks to the onboard computers, which can evaluate the ship's roll and pitch up to a hundred times per second and make adjustments to the foils to keep them level and sailing smoothly on the water.
Candela said that this not only reduces energy consumption by about 80% compared with the fast ferries currently in use, but also keeps the hull stable and reduces the wake to almost nothing. . This means the P-30 will be able to travel through urban waterways at higher speeds than other passenger ships without causing damage to other vessels or surrounding structures.
“Today, most of our waterways are not used for mass transportation, even though most highways are congested during rush hour,” Candela founder and CEO Gustav Hasselskog explain. "Opening urban waterways for high-speed electric transportation could revolutionize commuting in cities like San Francisco, Seoul or Amsterdam - at very low cost. No new infrastructure is required."
P Sea trials of the -30 are expected to kick off in Stockholm in 2022, and commercial operations are planned to begin in 2023.
“Our goal is to prove that our electric hydrofoil ferry is cheaper, more comfortable and more flexible than traditional boats. It is not just a replacement for other boats, but an important addition to public transport. A new interpretation of "
